When the school holidays do not feel like a holiday after separation

You have been counting down to the school holidays because you are exhausted.

Then the kids leave with their other parent, the front door closes, the house goes silent and suddenly the break you thought you wanted feels very different.

You miss the noise. You miss the mess. You even miss hearing “Mum” for the hundredth time that day.

Welcome to school holidays after separation.

The part nobody prepares you for

Then a photo pops up. The kids are somewhere beautiful with your former partner, looking happy. And even though you want them to be happy, that little voice starts: Are they having more fun there? Do I need to organise something amazing when they come back? What if they start preferring that life?

You do not need to compete.

Your children do not need the most exciting holiday. They need the boring breakfast, the beach walk, the movie on the couch, the familiar jokes and the feeling of being completely at home with you.

That is connection.

And what about you?

When you have spent years being Mum, partner, organiser, peacekeeper and the person who remembers absolutely everything, it can feel strange when nobody needs you for a few days.

Last weekend, I had the house completely to myself. I slept, I read, I walked with the dogs and I gave myself some space to think about what I want for the rest of this year.

Not what everyone else needs from me. Not what I should be doing. What I actually want.

Sometimes that is what the quiet gives us — a chance to hear ourselves again.

So if you have some child-free time these holidays, you do not need to fill every minute. Sleep. Walk. Read. Have coffee with a friend. Sit in the sunshine. Do something simply because you want to.

It is not about making your child-free time productive. It is about remembering there is still a woman underneath all the roles you have been carrying.

And she matters too.

This holiday does not have to be perfect

Some holidays will feel easier than others. Some handovers will sting. Some quiet nights will feel wonderful and others will feel lonely.

That is part of finding your new rhythm.

You are not recreating the life you had. You are building something new.

And one day, what feels strange now will simply feel like your life.
