When the rain won't stop

And neither will your thoughts

You know those days when you look outside, see yet another grey sky and think, Seriously? More rain?

That's exactly how I've been feeling lately.

After weeks of seemingly endless rain, I've been dealing with water damage to my own property. And let me tell you, there's nothing quite like dealing with repairs, insurance and unexpected expenses to test your patience.

But somewhere between worrying about the damage and figuring out what needed to happen next, I caught myself thinking something unexpected.

Maybe it's time to sell.

Not because I don't love the property. But because sometimes we hold on to things for the memories they carry, rather than because they still fit the life we're living.

And that got me thinking about separation.

Sometimes We're Holding On to More Than We Realise

When you're rebuilding your life after separation, it's easy to become attached to what used to be.

The family home. The traditions. The plans you made together. The version of your life you thought you'd have.

You might find yourself fighting to keep something simply because letting it go feels like losing another piece of your story.

I've been thinking about that with my property. Am I holding on because it's right for my future, or because of everything it represents from my past?

And here's something I'm reminding myself:

The memories don't disappear just because we decide to move on.

You can love what something meant to you and still recognise that it might be time for a change.

When Everything Feels Grey, Start Small

The endless rain hasn't exactly helped my motivation either. And if you've been feeling a little flat lately, perhaps you can relate.

So here are three things I'm trying to practise myself:

1. Ask yourself what you're holding on to. Is it genuinely making your life better today, or are you afraid of what letting go might mean?

2. Change something small. Get outside between showers, meet a friend for coffee, clear out a cupboard or make a plan you've been postponing. Sometimes one small action can shift your whole mood.

3. Focus on what you can control. You can't stop the rain. You can't change the past. But you can decide what deserves your energy moving forward.

Sometimes Letting Go Makes Financial Sense Too

And here's another thing I've been thinking about. Holding on to a property isn't just an emotional decision. It's a financial one too.

After separation, the family home can represent security, stability and years of memories. But it can also come with a mortgage, maintenance, repairs and financial pressure you may no longer want to carry alone.

Sometimes keeping the home is absolutely the right decision. Other times, selling might give you the financial freedom to start again.

The important thing is understanding your options before making a decision based on fear, guilt or nostalgia.

Maybe This Is Your Permission to Let Go

I'm not saying I'll sell my property. I'm still figuring that out.

But I am giving myself permission to consider it without feeling guilty about the memories attached to it.

And maybe there's something in your life that deserves the same consideration.

Because moving forward doesn't mean your past wasn't beautiful or important. It simply means you're making room for what comes next.

And sometimes, the biggest change begins when you finally ask yourself: Am I holding on because I want to, or because I'm afraid to let go?
